Every NAT engagement starts with a diagnostic session. The tutor maps point-loss patterns by section, question type, and time position (early, middle, late in each section). Intro Class
After the diagnostic, the tutor builds a session-by-session plan tied to the student's current composite, target composite, and test date. The plan accounts for the Enhanced ACT structure, including whether the student should add Science based on their target schools' requirements.

What NAT's ACT tutoring covers
The ACT has four multiple-choice sections: English, Math, Reading, and Science, plus an optional Writing essay. The composite score runs from 1 to 36. NAT tutors cover every section and build the speed and stamina the ACT demands, which is where most students leak points.
ACT English tutoring
The ACT English section has 75 questions in 45 minutes across 5 passages. It tests grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and rhetoric: word choice, organization, and tone. NAT tutors drill the specific rules the ACT repeats, so students stop answering by ear and start answering by rule.
ACT Math tutoring
The ACT Math section has 60 questions in 60 minutes covering pre-algebra, elementary algebra, intermediate algebra, coordinate geometry, plane geometry, and trigonometry. There is no wrong-answer penalty, so answering every question matters as much as getting it right. NAT Math tutors build speed, formula recall, and strategic guessing so students finish the section.
ACT Reading tutoring
The ACT Reading section has 40 questions in 35 minutes across 4 passages: prose fiction, social science, humanities, and natural science. The pace is the challenge: less than a minute per question with long passages. NAT tutors teach structural reading and evidence-based elimination rather than slow, careful reading that runs out the clock.
ACT Science tutoring
The ACT Science section has 40 questions in 35 minutes covering data representation, research summaries, and conflicting viewpoints. It does not require advanced science knowledge. It tests how well a student reads graphs, tables, and experimental descriptions. Most students lose 4–8 points here because they read the passages like a science textbook instead of going straight to the data. NAT tutors fix this pattern first.
ACT Writing (optional essay) tutoring
The optional Writing section is one 40-minute essay scored separately from the 1–36 composite. Some selective schools still ask for it. NAT tutors cover essay structure and time management for students whose target schools require the essay, without spending sessions on it for students who do not need it.

The NAT composite precision method
Over 60,000+ sessions covered and with 5000+ students, NAT's Ivy League ACT tutors developed a 4-phase framework for composite improvement that works from the student's actual error data, not a generic curriculum. It is called the Composite Precision Method, and it is the reason NAT students average 5+ composite point gains rather than the 1–2 points typical of group-based prep.
The method is built around one principle: a student's composite score is determined by their worst sections, not their best. Most prep programs treat all four sections equally. The Composite Precision Method does not.
Phase 1: Composite Leak Mapping
In the first 1–2 sessions, the tutor identifies exactly which sections, question types, and time positions are costing composite points. A student who is losing 4 points in Reading and 1 in Math gets a fundamentally different plan from one with the opposite profile. This mapping prevents the most common waste in ACT prep: spending sessions on sections the student is already passing.
Phase 2: Section-Specific Concept Repair

Phase 4: Full-Length Test Simulation and Debrief
Students complete full-length timed Enhanced ACT practice tests. After each test, the tutor runs a section-by-section debrief, identifying any remaining error patterns. Most students complete 2–3 full simulations in this phase before their official test date.
