This process is how the ACT scoring system actually works, and it confuses almost everyone the first time. Students search "how does ACT scoring work" because the test publisher does not explain the pipeline clearly. You get a number. You do not get the math behind it.

Second, your raw score converts to a scale score of 1-36 through a statistical process called equating. Third, your composite score is the average of your section scale scores, rounded to the nearest whole number.

What is a raw score, and how does it become a scale score?
The raw-to-scale conversion is where most students get lost. They expect a percentage. They get a number between 1 and 36. Those are not the same thing.
Your raw score is simply questions correct
Count every correct answer in a section. That total is your raw score. Nothing else affects it. On the Enhanced ACT, the section question counts are English (50), Math (45), Reading (36), and Science (40, now optional). There is no guessing penalty. A wrong answer and a blank both count the same, so fill in every bubble.
Equating adjusts for test difficulty
ACT uses a statistical process called equating to convert raw scores to scale results. The conversion table is not the same on every test date. A harder test gets a more forgiving conversion. An easier test gets a stricter one. This approach keeps scores comparable whether you tested in October or February.

Scale scores are what colleges see
The 1-36 scale score is the final reported number for each section. It is not a percentage. A scale score of 30 does not mean you got 83% correct. It means you performed at a level that places you in the 94th percentile nationally. The raw-to-scale conversion is test-specific, so you cannot calculate your scale score yourself before receiving your report.

How is your ACT composite score calculated?
The composite is straightforward arithmetic. The confusion comes from rounding, not from any hidden formula.
Step 1: Add your section scale scores
For the Enhanced ACT (tests from September 2025 onward), add English + Math + Reading. For tests taken before that change, add English + Math + Reading + Science. You can also check your composite estimate in real time using our free ACT score calculator.
Step 2: Divide by the number of sections
Enhanced ACT: divide by 3. Old ACT: divide by 4. Since the ACT Science section became optional in 2025, it no longer factors into this calculation.
Step 3: Round to the nearest whole number
A 0.5 rounds up. A 0.49 rounds down. This scenario is where students get surprised. A student with section scores of 25, 25, and 26 on the Enhanced ACT averages 25.33, which rounds to 25, not 26. One more point anywhere changes the average to 25.67, and the composite jumps to 26. Rounding is not random. It has structure, and that structure is exploitable.

The old 4-section math
Under the pre-2025 ACT, each section contributed 25% of the composite. A 3-point improvement in one section added exactly 0.75 to the composite average, which usually was not enough to round the composite up by one full point. You needed to improve across multiple sections to move the number.

Under the Enhanced ACT, each section contributes 33.3% of the composite. A 3-point improvement in one section now adds exactly 1.0 to the composite average. That is a guaranteed composite point from a single targeted section gain.

How is the ACT Writing test scored?
The ACT Writing test is scored by two trained readers who evaluate your essay across four domains: Ideas and Analysis, Development and Support, Organization, and Language Use and Conventions. Each reader scores each domain 1-6. The two readers' scores are added to produce four domain scores of 2-12. Your overall Writing score is the average of these four domain scores, rounded to the nearest whole number.
The four scoring domains
The essay is judged across four areas. Ideas and Analysis evaluate how well you engage with the perspectives in the prompt. Development and Support looks at how you back up your arguments with specific evidence and reasoning. The organization assesses how clearly your essay moves from the introduction through the conclusion. Language Use and Conventions covers grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure.
How readers assign scores
Two trained readers score each domain independently on a 1-6 scale. If two readers disagree by more than one point on any domain, a third reader resolves the discrepancy. This process is designed to reduce individual reader bias. The four domain scores appear on your report separately, so you can see exactly where each reader awarded or withheld points.
What the final score means
The overall Writing score runs from 2 to 12. The national average is around 6-7. This score does not count toward your composite. It appears on your report as a separate line. Some colleges require it, others recommend it, and some do not consider it at all. Check each school's requirements before deciding whether to take the Writing section.

What are experimental questions, and do they affect your score?
The ACT includes experimental questions, also called field test items, that do not count toward your score. On the Enhanced ACT, approximately 10 of the 50 English questions and 6 of the 40 Science questions are experimental. You cannot identify which questions are experimental during the test. Because there is no penalty for wrong answers, treat every question as if it counts and answer them all.
ACT includes these questions to evaluate potential future test content. They are distributed throughout the section alongside scored questions, often grouped within a passage so they do not interrupt the flow. From your perspective, there is no strategic response. You cannot skip them without risking skipping scored questions by mistake. Answer everything.
The practical takeaway is simple: do not try to spot the experimental questions. Focus on every problem as if it counts, because most of them do.
How does ACT superscoring work?
ACT superscoring takes your highest section scores across multiple test dates and combines them into a new composite. If your best English score came from your February test and your best Math score came from your April test. The ACT takes both and averages them with your best Reading and Science scores to produce a superscore composite.
What is a superscore?
A superscore is the highest composite score ACT can calculate from all of your test dates. It uses only your best section scores regardless of when you earned them. The calculation follows the same rounding rules as the regular composite.
How to calculate your superscore
Pull your score report from each test date. Identify your highest scale score in each section. For the Enhanced ACT, use English, Math, and Reading. Add those three scores and divide by three, then round using the 0.5 rule. The result is your superscore composite.

How to read your ACT score report
Most students look at the composite and stop reading. Your score report has five layers of data, and the composite is only the first. The students who improve fastest are the ones who know what the other four layers mean.
Line 1: Composite score
Your headline number. The average of your section scale scores, rounded. This score is what applications and admissions systems reference first. The average ACT score nationally for the class of 2025 was 19.4, which gives you a baseline for comparison.
Line 2: Section scores
English, Math, Reading, and Science, each on the 1-36 scale. Compare each section score against the ACT College Readiness Benchmarks: English 18, Math 22, Reading 22, Science 23. Any section below its benchmark is a prep priority, regardless of how the composite looks on the surface.
Line 3: STEM and ELA scores
The STEM score is the average of Math and Science. The ELA score is the average of English, Reading, and Writing (if taken). These combined scores give STEM programs and liberal arts programs a faster way to evaluate fit. Some scholarship programs also reference them directly.
Line 4: Reporting categories
This section is where the most useful information lives. Reporting categories break each section into specific skill areas and show the percentage of questions you answered correctly in each area. Line 5: Percentiles
National rank for the composite and for each section. Compare your section percentiles to each other, not your raw section scores. A 24 in English is the 73rd percentile. A 24 in Math is the 80th. They look the same on the score report. They do not hold the same position nationally.
